Brief:

Develop and animate unique typography inspired by a significant event.

Solution:

The goal was to create forms that are reflective of a significant person or place, which to me, was my middle school band teacher. I wanted to capture the structure and organization of learning classical music yet display the energy, freedom, and loudness that was my experience. I chose the word discipline because I wanted to show the positives of learning that trait. Structure and consistency can be applied to anything you learn in life and I am lucky to have learned it from my instructor.

Process:

I began by taking various instruments and musical hardware and simplifying them down to geometric forms. I thought of this as building the pieces I would need to put together a puzzle and develop a consistent visual language.

After creating my assets, it was time to pick a font and get sketching. I chose Norwester as a guide because of its verticality, thickness, and ability to nicely fill up space on standard or tabloid prints. I wanted each letter to be able to stand alone yet also come together to create something even greater.

The next step was building the letters in Illustrator. Within the letters, I hid my band teacher along with various little objects that represent important times in her life such as a husky (she went to UW), a sonics logo (played drum line for them), a Seahawks logo (played in blue thunder), and a knight because that was the mascot of the school she taught at.
