Brief:

Develop a series of maps to highlight produce, boundaries, irrigation systems, and key locations on the farm that will streamline the orientation of new farm hands.

Background:

To venture out of my typical day-to-day, I participated in a work-away program where I had the pleasure of staying on the North Shore of Oahu. During my time on the farm, I learned about local agriculture, irrigation systems, general farming practices, and even how to surf! A family of three has people from all over the world come to help around the orchard, and during my last month there, we worked together to develop these maps.

Process:

After referencing google maps for general spatial information, I surveyed the land and created very rough sketches of how the farm was divided. The owners and I iterated on what to emphasize and how they wanted these maps to be laid out. After all my sketches I began developing a visual language and a library of assets I could use to build the maps.

Final Designs:

Overview Maps

I designed these maps to clearly show how the land is divided and where specific types of produce are. Harvesting fruit was a common task and these provide both old and new farmhands a quick reference.

Irrigation Maps

These maps are intended to make the process of watering lots straightforward. When I first arrived to the farm, I frequently had to check in with the owner to confirm I was watering the correct lot at the correct time. I provide more in depth views of locations with accurate representations of the irrigation lines, step by step instructions, and clear diagrams of the manifolds.

Results:

This was a very fun project and fulfilling considering I was able to see the positive effects of the work quite quickly. A few new farmhands came onboard after these were made and they said it really helped them get a feel for the area. Since all the irrigation steps were laid out, it saved the owner from having to repeat this information time and time again.
