Brief:
Pilot data architecture maps, develop flow charts, and create illustrations for Google Cloud Data Loss Prevention. Develop a systemized template for the data maps.
Solution:
After getting myself up to speed on the technical details of the product, I conducted competitor data map research and worked closely with a diverse team to design the system and diagrams.
I took this project from start to finish in a period of three months with regular critique and revision. During that time, I handled complex product concepts and translated them into informative marketing materials.
Background:
What is Google Cloud Data Loss Prevention (DLP)?
It’s a Google Cloud product that gives you the power to scan, discover, classify, and report on sensitive data. DLP provides tools to classify, mask, tokenize, and transform sensitive elements to help you manage the data that you collect, store, or use for business or analytics.
Team:
Based in Kirkland and Seattle Washington, Cloud DLP consists of engineers, designers, a marketing team, copy writers, managers and more. Below are the people I primarily interfaced with while developing the data maps.
Data Maps:
Redesign:
My goal was to translate the original system architecture diagrams into informative marketing materials that would improve user perception of fundamental product concepts. I redesigned with the intent to improve comprehension, appeal, and reproducibility
Iconography:
A few of the concepts in the diagrams did not have icons developed so I created these three.
Illustrations:

Template backgrounds
Template:
Within the same Google slides document as the data maps, there is an appendix that goes more into depth on how the system works with specific design details. The intent is to inform people of the system but also make it easy to copy and paste elements.

Marketing Illustrations:
After completing the data maps, I was tasked with developing a series of illustrations that reflect the core functions of Cloud DLP with the intent of being used across marketing websites.
Data Protection
Data Audit
Data Regionalization
Data De-Identification
Data Mapping
Data Source Flexibility

Reflection:
Collaborative, Iterative, and Impactful
I had the opportunity to work with a great team who were open to my concepts and made me feel like a valued member. The process was considerably smooth considering one, the pandemic and two, that I was the first designer to contract between Robert Half and Google. It was a learning experience for all of us and and although brief, it will have a lasting impact on Cloud DLP and my design career.
Challenges:
Prior to this project, I have not had much experience working in Google slides. As more of a presentation tool than a design software, I had to use its constraints to build a visually appealing system that is functional and editable.
Working remotely changed how often I interacted with my team and communication suffered slightly.
Results:
Product manager has successfully used the template to create client specific data maps.
Google Cloud Platform assured workloads noticed the system and plans to use the template to develop their own assets.
I’m excited to see how my system will evolve over time and improve product comprehension and sales.
